Curriculum development update: where we are

One of the goals of a school curriculum is that students develop skills, dispositions, and knowledge they need to reach their full potential. Accomplishing this goal requires a curriculum that is balanced, challenging, developmentally appropriate and coherent from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

At B.D. Somani we have started looking at curriculum alignment in a number of different subjects. Priority was given to:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Hindi
  • Science
  • Marathi
In these subjects, teams of primary and secondary teachers are working collaboratively to better align the content taught in each grade so that the students’ learning experience is unique and coherent with what they learnt in previous years. We want to ensure that students do no repeat content across different years; at the same time, we want to identify gaps in content that learners may experience in some subjects.
An example of what teachers have been working on is shown below. This is a snapshot from the sequence of content in Mathematics:
We can see that in the topic ‘number and number system’, subtopic ‘number’, teachers have created a sequence of content to document the learning of this specific area from Reception to Grade 12.
We are planning to complete the sequence of content for Mathematics, Science, and Hindi by December. English and Marathi will follow in the first quarter of the second semester. In these subjects, we are also discussing the skills needed for students to perform high, so that we ensure a common approach between skills and content developed in each grade.
More to come from the curriculum development team soon!
