Just Dance 2020!

The Junior Student Council (2019-20) of B.D. Somani International School organized a dance competition in the school for grades 6-9 on 27th February 2020. It was a memorable day for all contestants, and definitely a day of technical issues and tremendous fun for the Junior Student Council! There were songs from all genres ranging from pop and contemporary to classical.
This year, the theme of the competition was ‘the best of both worlds’. Each participant could interpret it differently, but had to show their interpretation in their dance. We received many ideas, including one about Harry Potter! Each contestant was judged on their interpretation, choreography, and audiovisuals. The total was out of 200 (50*4 judges).
The event started with a bang, thanks to Ilisha Khokhani’s energetic dance on ‘Muqabla’, which included a hoverboard! Crazy, right? Next, Yashvi who has been learning Bharatnatyam for 6 years put on a Bharatnatyam dance on Ed Sheeran’s Shape of you. After Yashvi, there was a group of 7th-grade girls, Arushi, Simran and Junyou. They had a truly amazing concept and they called themselves ‘Muggles, Mudblood and Wizards’! They danced to a trap remix of ‘expecto patronum’, and impressed everybody.
Next came a boy who had an amazing, yet different dance last year to ‘tauba tauba’ and this time he portrayed his rendition of his idols- Hrithik Roshan and Chris Brown’s dances. It was none other than Aryaan Advani! After Aryaan’s dance, we had a filler, performed by Isha and Amanya, both members of the JSC. They performed the same dance in Kochi, but they received an even better response this time round. Lauded by teachers and students alike, their Odissi-Bharatnatyam fusion was just spectacular!
Following the filler, Kasha performed a stunning ballet solo, even though her track ended abruptly in the middle due to some technical errors. We respect her for her courage because she didn’t get frazzled even when needing to perform again. After Kasha, 6th grader Inaaya gave a powerful dance on one Bollywood and one Hollywood song, which was pretty lively!
Next was experienced duo Arjun and Anaaya, who came second in last year’s competition, whose concept was about the two different worlds of dancing and studying. They did a mix of hip-hop and contemporary to ‘Fire’, and lit up the stage. To finish off the event, Shivani performed to Indian classical covers of two very popular English songs, ‘Let me love you’ and ‘Cheap thrills’, and did a splendid job.
After an energetic, power-packed and enjoyable event, it was time for results. In 4th place were Arjun and Anaaya with 151 points out of 200.
For third place, it was Shivani with 153 points. In the second position, there was Inaaya with 159 points.
The winners were… the Harry Potter Girls! Simran, Junyou, and Arushi got 166 points to clinch the title from everybody else!
