The Arts Programme

Some of the constant joys for students at BD Primary are singing songs in the Music Room, exploring the various art materials and creating masterpieces in the Art Room, and making sense of the world and people around them and understanding themselves in the Theatre Room. These spaces are not just Visual or Performing Art Spaces. These spaces are liberating spaces, spaces of deeper learning. The Arts help us to create powerful learning environments and opportunities by providing a natural landscape to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in various academic areas. One such examples are the Annual Events, which are the hallmark of the BD Primary program.

Visual, Music and Theatre Art enables children to explore and express ideas, feelings and experiences. Art develops aesthetical knowledge and creates self-awareness, making children sensitive to the environment through the enjoyment of visual, aural, tactile and spatial qualities. They develop abilities, potential and acquire techniques to practise the skills necessary for creative expression for joyful participation in different art forms.

Visual Arts

The benefits of the visual arts are lifelong and the process begins early. Children are born artists. Right from the time they enter school, our young artists are involved in exploring and understanding the materials. Working with one one primary colour and a variety of material – their fingers, palm, a leaf, a brush they create artworks which could represent a house, a garden, a butterfly, their family.

Students’ artworks show that Visual Art does not have boundaries. It enables students to play with materials and express their thinking. It is interesting to see how each grade handles not only the various media but also understands the concepts of Art. Visual art allows children to enter imaginative worlds, be creative and engage in playful thinking. Their power of representation is beyond imagination when they reflect on their Artwork. Students portray the social issues and lessons learned in their core disciplines through the medium of art be it the weather or environmental issues and use their imagination to express their creativity. They study various artists to understand their artwork and to understand them as people.

Our huge open field and proximity to the bay create opportunities for students to hone their observation and sketching skills outside the four walls of the Art Room. Developing students artistic literacy is not limited to using paper and paints as a medium. Students experimented with digital art when online. The weaving loom and the potter’s wheel in the Art Room invite students to explore other materials such as cloth, clay to create artworks. Creating, exploring and discovering is at the heart of visual arts.

Theatre

Theatre has been an influential factor in the learning process of students, allowing their creativity to flourish and enabling the development of their self-expression. Intended to promote curiosity, collaboration and creativity, theatre class is a place where the students meet the hidden performer within them. Thus, at B D Somani, students are introduced to Theatre at an early stage during Kindergarten. Through the medium of role-playing, they express their dreams of who they want to become in the future. At times, a doctor is born, and at other times, a scientist. Performing Aarts Arts become a pillar for students to be confident, share their opinions and take hard knocks gracefully.
The primary focus of theatre classes, besides voice modulation. speech and diction, mirror and theatre exercises, is to help children explore themselves within and without, understand others and the world around them and develop empathy and perspective taking by playing different characters. Theatre by its very nature aids in the development of various social and communication skills.
Our theatre classes are abuzz with students moving to various music and rhythm and understanding movement and space. Gradually, they start exploring the impact of voice, tone and words in communicating meaning and intention, combined with gestures and verbal and non-verbal expressions. Intertwined with these other elements of theatre are explored. Students use their imagination and lived experiences to craft stories and write scripts. They enact their stories, short scenes in their class and seek feedback from their peers. Improvisation, stagecraft and techniques, the role of the space and various props are inquired during their primary years. The skills learnt in the theatre class seamlessly transition into the classroom and students use drama as a form of expressing their understanding of various learnt concepts such as their understanding of the novels read, the life cycle of a plant, roleplaying a math word problem etc.

Music

“I get the most joy in life out of Music”

The Music Program at BD Primary ensures that our learners experience utmost joy through various music engagements. Music is an integral part of their learning and human experience. To enhance and empower their self-expression, intelligence and creativity, music provides a safe and positive learning environment where students express themselves, move to music, compose their songs and play instruments.
The general music program aims at assisting students to understand the function of music in their life through different genres and techniques, communicate their responses to music experiences and explore ways to integrate music into their daily lives.
The comprehensive music learning experience of the students that begins from Kindergarten and extends up to Grade 5 helps students to achieve each milestone in Music as finally in grade 5 they create their piece of music.
